Ile de Saint-Louis

Saint-Louis war die erste französische Siedlung in Afrika und nicht nur die einstige Hauptstadt Senegals, sondern von ganz Westafrika. Seit 2000 zählt der historische Stadtkern, der sich auf einer vom Fluss Senegal umringten Insel befindet, zum Unesco-Weltkulturerbe. Noch heute zeugen die zahlreichen farbenfrohen Herrschaftshäuser als Überbleibsel der Kolonial-architektur vom einstigen Wohlstand der Stadt. Da aber weder die Eigentumsverhältnisse geklärt sind, noch Geld für Restaurierungen vorhanden ist, verfallen die Gebäude zusehends.

Saint-Louis was the first French settlement in Africa and not only the former capital of Senegal, but of all West Africa.

Since 2000, the historic city centre, which is located on an island surrounded by the Senegal River, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Even today, the numerous colourful stately homes as remnants of colonial architecture bear witness

to the city's former prosperity. But as neither the ownership situation is clarified nor there is money for restoration, the buildings are rapidly decaying.
